Onsite Pop-ups behave differently based on the device and form settings. We’ll cover each of them in this article and give you an overview of how your forms will behave when you set them live.
How do Onsite Pop-ups behave on desktop?
Let’s take a look at how popups, forms and bars behave on desktop devices.
Popups and forms on Desktop
Regardless of their goal or position, the building process consists of a form step, teaser, and success step. The "Form" step is the main content of your form, whereas the teaser and success step can be enabled or disabled with a click.
If your form has a teaser;
- The teaser will show immediately when a visitor loads your page.
In other words, the triggers you set, such as “show after 5 seconds”, don’t apply to the teaser.
- The "Form" step will show when the visitor clicks the teaser or based on the triggers you set. (Example: after 5 seconds.)
🚨 Important: The form step will only be triggered once per session. After that, visitors can manually open the form again by clicking the teaser.
- When the visitor sees the form and clicks the close button, the form minimizes back to the teaser.
- The teaser will keep showing until the visitor clicks the CTA button in your form or the close button on the teaser (if your teaser has a close button.)
If your Onsite Pop-up doesn’t have a teaser;
- The form step will show based on the trigger you set. For example, if you use a timed trigger for 5 seconds, your form will show after the visitor spends 5 seconds on the page.
- The form step will only show once per session on the first page the user visits. (Based on the page-level targeting options you set.)
🚨 Important: Closing down the browser doesn’t end the session. A session expires when a user has been inactive for at least 30 minutes. If you want to see your form in action once more, use an incognito/private browsing window.
Sticky bars don’t have any trigger options, therefore, they’ll automatically appear on your site when the page is loaded.
Sticky bars keep showing until the visitor interacts with it. (Such as clicking a link, submitting a form, or using the close button on the sticky bar.)
Once the visitor interacts with a sticky bar, they won’t see the sticky bar again in the same session.
How do Onsite Pop-ups behave on mobile?
Let’s cover how popups and sticky bars behave on your mobile site.
Pop-ups on Mobile
To ensure the best user experience on mobile, your pop-ups will only show when a visitor clicks the teaser.
In other words, your form's triggers won’t apply to the mobile version, and your mobile form will only show when the visitor decides to see it.
If you want to add a trigger to your mobile forms, first, you need to disable the teaser.
Note: Disabling the teaser may violate Google’s interstitials policy and, therefore, isn’t recommended.
Remember to add a trigger to your form after disabling the teaser. Otherwise, your form won’t show on mobile.
🚨 Important: Exit-intent isn’t supported on mobile. Make sure that your form has a different trigger if you choose this method.
Sticky Bars on Mobile
Sticky bars don’t have any triggers, so, they’ll behave the same way on mobile, as they do on desktop:
- Your sticky bar will automatically appear when the page is loaded;
- It will keep showing until the visitor interacts with it; and
- It won’t show again in the same session, once the visitor interacts with it.
