This pre-built ecommerce-centric workflow makes it easier to grow your email list by handing out discounts in exchange for an email address. Not only does this encourage leads to make a purchase using their newly acquired coupon, but it also gives you the opportunity to continue to promote new products and offers to them in the future.
In this article:
For this workflow to function as intended, you should first integrate the following service(s) with your Drip account:
Why do I need a third-party integration?
As you get more familiar with this workflow in the upcoming sections, it will become apparent that Shopify provides essential functionality as the source for the following trigger events:
This event triggers after someone places an order on your Shopify store.
This event triggers after someone updates their current order.
These Shopify events are essential in defining the triggers for the two Goals located about halfway through the workflow.
Scroll through this workflow and get a quick feel for what's going on. Then, follow the steps below the example to install it in your account.
To install the above workflow in your account:
- From the workflow example directly above, click Install This Workflow.
- When redirected, complete the install by authenticating your Drip account (if you aren't already logged in). If you have multiple accounts, you must select the account where you'd like it installed.
What's included with the install?
Aside from the workflow, a campaign placeholder entitled 'Coupon Welcome Series' is also included. Navigate to the Campaigns tab to find that placeholder in your account. Make sure to modify the campaign email(s) to include your marketing copy, and you can add additional emails as needed.
In the next section, you'll learn more about how the workflow functions.
So that you get the most out of this pre-built workflow, take a moment to learn more about the functionality this workflow provides.
Entry trigger and automation actions
The peak of the workflow consists of the entry point, also known as the entry trigger. As it comes installed, the workflow will trigger for any subscriber who submits a Drip form. That is achieved using the following trigger event:
Submitted a form
Triggers when a subscriber submits a Drip form.
Once inside the workflow, the following two actions get applied to subscribers:
Record an event
Records a given event name for a subscriber. In this workflow, the event records the instance when a subscriber starts the workflow.
Send a campaign
Subscribes a subscriber to a given campaign. In this workflow, that action is pre-set to send the 'Coupon Welcome Series' placeholder campaign. Make sure to update the email(s) in that campaign with your own content, or you can swap it out for a different campaign you want to use in its place.
3-day Delay and Exit
After completing the campaign, subscribers enter into a 3-day delay to give them a more time to make a purchase. If a purchase is not made within the timeframe defined by the delay, the subscriber immediately exits the workflow.
Goals and post-purchase actions
Below the first exit, two goals are placed horizontally to each other using the two Shopify events (Order created, Order updated). If while in any step above the goals a subscriber either places an order or updates an existing one, the goals will trigger and further automation will be applied.
Before exiting, subscribers get applied a tag by the following action:
Apply a tag
Applies a given tag to a subscriber. The tag allows you to label those subscribers who complete the workflow.
The subscriber exits the workflow after the tag is applied.
Can I edit this workflow to better fit my use case?
Yes. We've attempted to keep this workflow as 'cookie cutter' as possible for this type of welcome series, but we do encourage you to modify it any way that fits best for the outcome you're looking to achieve. If this workflow is too out of scope with what you're wanting to do, consider browsing through the rest of our pre-built workflows for one that's a better fit.
Before you activate the workflow
Make sure to complete the following tasks before activating the workflow:
- Activate the form(s) you're using for the entry trigger.
- Update the 'Coupon Welcome Series' campaign placeholder, and then activate it. Or, swap out that placeholder for a different campaign.
Next, activate the workflow.
To activate the workflow in your account:
- Click Activate Workflow.
Note: Once activated, the workflow will intake any subscriber that triggers the entry trigger event.
It's peace of mind knowing that something will work properly and continue to run smoothly long after. That's why we suggest testing this workflow by running test subscribers through it. A 'test subscriber' is just a subscriber in your account that you create with your own personal email address. Learn how to quick-add a subscriber here.
How should I test this workflow?
Note: Testing does require you to activate the workflow.
Using a test subscriber, trigger the event which defines the current entry trigger into the workflow and take note of how the workflow handles the subscriber. Unless you have modified that trigger since installing it, you can submit any Drip form currently active on your website. The form submission fires the trigger event and your test subscriber will gain entry.
Or, if that seems too risky, you can replace the current entry trigger with a more exclusive trigger event until you're able to complete your testing. Once you're ready to open up the workflow to live subscribers, be sure to switch the entry trigger back to the trigger event you'll be using.
