Pruning Operations find subscribers in your account with no email engagement over a given number of emails or days then unsubscribes them from your list. Unengaged subscribers not only bring down your email metrics, but they can also have a huge impact on overall list health.
Run a new Pruning Operation
- Click People.
- Click Pruning Operations.
- Click + New Pruning Operation.
- Select from Count-Based or Time-Based.
- If Count-Based, enter any number up to the maximum of 90 emails. If Time-Based, enter any number up to the maximum of 120 days.
- Click Refresh.
- Click Prune People.
- From the prompt, click I'm sure, unsubscribe these people.
Note: Pruning operations cannot be reversed. Always double check the segment to be pruned before you finalize any operation.
Once a pruning operation is complete, the subscribers included in the segment still remain on your list but are unsubscribed from all mailings. Those subscribers are no longer able to receive commercial marketing email from you, but can still receive transactional email.
The only way a subscriber can resubscribe to your list is through a Drip form, or through the subscription management page accessible through the unsubscribe link in an email they've already received from you.
Pruning Operation Segment
The two main criteria options to run a pruning operation are Count-Based and Time-Based.
Based on how you choose to run the operation, Time-Based is able to search as far back as 120 days. Count-Based is able to search through a subscriber's last 90 emails. If the number entered exceeds either of those limits, the operation won't run properly.
Beyond the two main criteria, additional filters can be applied to further segment the subscribers included in a pruning operation. The Time-Based example above finds the subscribers on your list that have not opened or clicked an email in the last thirty days. The added lead scoring criteria further segments to find subscribers that satisfy the time-based requirements and who have a lead score of fewer than twenty points.
